This week, the nationally syndicated Mark Trail comic strip discussed aerial LiDAR. This very simple overview is fun to see in a national newspaper. One point to correct would be that LiDAR does not penetrate objects. As ranging lasers pass through a tree canopy, some will strike leaves and offer a”first return” at the height of a canopy, while others will find gaps in the obstruction and offer a more useful “second return” at ground level.
