With people stuck working from home for the foreseeable future, certain opportunities may have opened up to learn new software or to start that DIY project you keep putting off. If you happen to be new to ArcGIS or are just looking to refresh your skills, please follow along in this blog post about creating a basic web map in ArcGIS Online. Web maps in ArcGIS Online can cover a range of purposes, themes, and ideas. They can be complex and multi-layered, giving you various ways to analyze and interpret data or they can serve as a basic tool to simply view data. Today, I am going to show you how to start small and build a basic web map for viewing in ArcGIS Online.

First, log in to your ArcGIS Online account by going to ArcGIS.com

Secondly, select Map tab from navigation toolbar at the top. This will open up a blank web map viewer as a template for you to begin map making.

To add data, select Add from the map toolbar. From here, you can search for data from your Organizational account or bring in data from file or the web.

Select Content to view your feature classes in list view. The tools listed below the name of a given feature class will allow you to view the attribute table, symbolize data, create labels and much more.

When you are satisfied with your results, be sure to Save your map to your ArcGIS Online account. Once you have saved the map you can share it with users or groups within your organization, ArcGIS Online users outside of your organization or just keep it for yourself.

Now, keep in mind this is a very basic workflow for creating a web map in ArcGIS Online. To learn more from one of Seiler’s expert Tech Support staff members, please contact us at [email protected].
